Bali Batik Making

In 2014, I had the opportunity to document a family-run batik-making business just outside Ubud, Bali. Through my lens, I captured the intricate process of batik production, from the initial sketching of designs to the final touches on vibrant fabrics. The images tell a story of tradition and craftsmanship, with family members working in harmony, each playing a vital role in the creation of their art.

The photographs not only showcase the beauty of batik but also highlight the deep bond shared by the family. Their dedication to preserving this traditional craft is evident in every step of the process, from the careful application of wax to the precise dyeing of the fabrics. The setting, surrounded by lush greenery and the gentle sounds of Bali, adds a serene backdrop to the vibrant colours and detailed patterns of the batik.

Through these images, I aimed to capture not just the technique, but the spirit of a family united by their love for this age-old tradition. The photographs stand as a testament to their hard work, skill, and the cultural heritage they continue to preserve.
